The miracle of Saint Spyridon with the brick – the mystery of the Holy Trinity

Few miracles in the history of the Church have been as simple and yet so full of meaning as the miracle of Saint Spyridon with the brick . His gesture became a living image of faith, a proof of the work of the Holy Spirit through humble but grace-filled people.

Before the learned, he did not bring arguments, but the sign of a miracle – a fire, a water, and a piece of clay – united into one body, just as God is One in being, but threefold in Persons.

(H2) Saint Spyridon – the shepherd who amazed the world

Born in Cyprus in the 4th century, Saint Spyridon was a simple man, a shepherd, but full of faith. After the death of his wife, he dedicated himself entirely to Christ and was elected bishop of Trimithunda.

Although he had no higher education, Saint Spyridon was rich in grace and spiritual wisdom. When the Church was called to the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325) to clarify the heresy of Arius, who denied the divinity of the Son, he was among those who confessed the truth.

"Holiness is not learned from books, but is received from the light of God."

(H3) The miracle of the brick – the testimony of the Holy Trinity

In front of Emperor Constantine and those present at the council, Saint Spyridon took a simple brick in his hand and made the sign of the Holy Cross, saying:

"Just as this brick is one, but has within itself three elements – fire, water and clay – so too God is One in being, but threefold in Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit."

Then, under the gaze of everyone, fire gushed from the brick upwards, water downwards , and only the clay remained in the saint's hand. The miracle filled everyone with amazement, and many of the unbelievers fell to their knees.

This incident became one of the most famous testimonies of the Orthodox faith, being commemorated to this day at the Saint's services.

(H3) What does the miracle of Saint Spyridon teach us?

The brick miracle is not only a proof of God's power, but also a lesson in simplicity and pure faith .
Saint Spyridon showed that truth is not imposed through words, but through light. The brick – a banal thing – became by grace a living sermon on the mystery of the Holy Trinity.

Since then, his icons often depict him holding a brick in his right hand, as a sign of this miracle.

(H2) Saint Spyridon – the miracle worker of the Orthodox world

Throughout the centuries, Saint Spyridon has been known for countless miracles: healings, deliverance from famine, rain brought through prayer, and even the resurrection of the dead.
His body, found whole and incorrupt on the island of Corfu (Kerkyra), spreads a scent of myrrh and is proof of the work of divine grace.

Believers around the world honor him as the protector of the poor, the sick, and travelers , and on his feast day on December 12, thousands of people come to pray at his relic.

"Saint Spyridon never leaves prayer unanswered."

(H2) Closing thought
