Every year, on October 26 , Orthodox Christians honor the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius, the Myrrh-Giver — one of the Church's most beloved saints.
But have you ever wondered why Saint Demetrius is painted as a soldier in icons, wearing a breastplate and a spear?
The answer is not only about history, but also about the symbol of a fearless faith that does not bow down to the world.
Saint Demetrius was born in Thessalonica , into a high-ranking family. Emperor Maximian appointed him commander of the city, due to his courage and education.
Although he was in the service of the Roman army, his faith was only in Christ . When commanded to sacrifice to idols, Demetrius openly confessed:
"Only Christ is the true God."
For this confession he was imprisoned, and later pierced with spears , receiving the crown of martyrdom.
In icons, Saint Demetrius wears armor, a spear, and a shield – not as a sign of worldly power, but of spiritual victory .
He is a "soldier of Christ", defender of the faith and model of courage for those who fight for the truth.
That is why Byzantine icons depict him riding a horse or standing, defeating the dragon of temptations , like Saint George.
After his martyrdom, his body was placed in Thessalonica, and healing myrrh began to flow from it, which healed countless believers.
Since then, he has been called the Fountain of Myrrh , and his veneration has spread throughout the Orthodox world.
Today, Saint Demetrius is considered the patron saint of Thessaloniki , but also of all those who pray for courage, healing, and victory over evil .
He remains a symbol of fearless faith and the power that comes from love.

@ypomoni.ro Saint Demetrius, the Myrrh-Bearer, is painted as a soldier not because he fought in worldly wars, but because he was a soldier of Christ and a model of courage in faith.
